Pre-Big Sur

  1. Select the Preferences icon in the main RDP window.

  2. Select the Gateway tab in the upper left corner.
  3. Select the plus icon in the lower left corner.
  4. Enter the following information:
    Gateway Name: U of I RDP Gateway
    Server: rdpgateway.illinois.edu
    Username: UOFIyourNetID
    Password: Your NetID Password

  5. Close the window (changes are saved automatically) and return to the main Microsoft Remote Desktop application window.

Adding the RDP Gateway to existing connections in Microsoft Remote Desktop

  1. Select the connection under “My Desktops” you wish to use the gateway with.
  2. Select the Edit icon.
  3. Select the Gateway Drop-down menu, change to “U of I RDP Gateway' and close the window (changes are saved automatically).
  4. Repeat for any other connections you wish to use the campus RDP Gateway to access.
NOTE: If you do not like Microsoft Remote Desktop running in a separate Space (virtual display), merely setting the 'Full screen mode' to “Custom” will prevent this behavior and run it as a traditional application

Mac OSX Big Sur

  1. Select Preferences > Gateways then click the + button.
  2. Enter the following information:
    Gateway name: rdpgateway.illinois.edu
    Friendly Name: U of I RDP Gateway
    User name: UOFIYour_NetID

  1. Right click on the connection you would like to add the RDP Gateway to and select Edit.


  2. In the Gateway section, select rdpgateway.illinois.edu.


  3. Click Save.
